A Passionate Chef Born to be in the Kitchen
After moving to Toronto in 1988, Asokan Rasiah spent just one month as a dishwasher before becoming a line cook. Within six months, his passion ignited the kitchen and he became a chef.
“I just fell in love with working in the kitchen,” says Asokan. “It was such an exciting atmosphere. I knew right away I would always work in the restaurant industry.”
Asokan worked as a head chef for several years until the restaurant’s owners decided they wanted to sell. Asokan didn’t hesitate to buy it, and in 1993 he opened Peartree Restaurant.
“After changing the name and the atmosphere of the restaurant, I knew I never wanted to leave. This would be my first and last job in Canada,” he says.

Affordable Continental Cuisine Cooked Fresh Daily
Offering traditional continental cuisine, Peartree Restaurant is perfect for family dinners or a night out with friends. “We have everything from pasta and stir fry to burgers and steak,” explains Asokan. “No matter what each member of your group is craving, there’s something here they will find delicious.”
Featuring solely homemade food, everything cooked at Peartree Restaurant is made fresh daily. “We don’t freeze any of our food, and always do our best to buy local produce when it is available and in season.”
Despite the exceptional quality of every individual dish, Asokan prides himself on making sure his menu is still affordable for everyone. “I always wanted a restaurant that would be affordable for a large family on a regular night out,” he explains. “Something about bringing in happy groups of people keeps the restaurant alive and positive.”
A Family-Friendly Atmosphere Perfect for Groups of All Ages
With its family-friendly atmosphere, Peartree Restaurant has hosted many of the same customers since it opened in 1993. “I see regular customers in here weekly; the same people that were here on opening night,” explains Asokan. “It’s a truly incredible feeling to know that these people have stuck by our restaurant for decades.”
In addition to their customers, Peartree Restaurant has also kept a number of employees since the day they opened. “Many of my servers and even my head chef have been here since the day we opened – or even before that,” says Asokan. “Even through a few recessions, we’ve been able to keep our incredible team together and maintain our high standards of food and customer service.”
The biggest reward about owning Peartree Restaurant? “I love our regular customers. Seeing the same faces for decades is a great feeling for a restaurant owner and chef,” he says. “I’ll be happy working here until the day I retire.”
